Who Am I?

love personified

I’m the personification of love: patient, kind, hopeful, grateful.

I’m multi-passionate and purpose driven. If I have a passion for the purpose then I’ll run on fumes to achieve the objective.

My purpose is to spread love around like wildfire.

How do I spread love?

By working on endeavors that align with my values. By infusing love into every interaction. By elevating the conversation. By being solutions focused when a challenge is identified. Everything I do is done with love.

I add value to the world by arming folks with knowledge and skills so they have the abilities to improve their health, lives, and communities.

I blend community organizing, public engagement, and outreach strategies with digital online organizing and storytelling to make experiences richer and more meaningful.

I’m a mix of many parts: part passionate online-offline organizing strategist, part storytelling trainer, part inspirational speechifier, and 100% “Grade A” change-making community builder.

My desire to spread love led me to work as a Field (Community) Organizer and Deputy Director of Operations on the first Obama campaign in 2007/08. In 2012, I was Digital Director of Illinois on the Webby award-winning team responsible for raising more than $690 million online for the re-election of Barack Obama.

In November 2012, just 2 short weeks after concluding the second biggest campaign in my career (first being Obama ’08), I walked into my room, fell, hit my head against the wall (put a nice sized hole in the wall), and was hospitalized. After 9 days, an MRI, 2 spinal taps, and a 3 day course of intravenous steroids, I emerged with the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a neurodegenerative autoimmune disease for which there is no known cure.

Seismologists tell of an impending catastrophic earthquake that’ll decimate Los Angeles. They call it “the big one”. Well, MS was my “big one.” It shook my whole world and disrupted everything.

Living with MS has been a challenge. Since the initial diagnosis, I’ve been diagnosed with a condition called nystagmus and endure low vision.

I’ve dramatically altered my lifestyle to live a more full life with MS.

I’m very socially and digitally active. I give speeches on the power of social/digital/outreach tools to build and mobilize community, personal and community wellness, and overcoming life’s challenges.

My audiences appreciate that I speak from a place of knowing what it means to have life knock the shit out of you, laugh at your plans, and come out stronger because of the hits. I repeatedly get knocked down, but still, like dust, I rise. I don’t allow MS to hold me down.

As a digital maven, I’ve taught political campaigns, small businesses, nonprofits, and community groups to thrive in our social/digital world and achieve extraordinary results by finding and engaging their audience online. In other words, I make sure their digital campaigns are awesome and create data inspired plans to make them even more remarkable.

Empowering people to become leaders in their communities and BE the change they want to see through storytelling and technology for community-based change is what I’m all about.

I’m also about Wu Tang Clan, Prince, Stevie Wonder, and gardening. I’m sure gardening while listening to Wu Tang Clan has made my brassicas more nutrient dense.

My Philosophy

  • Your online program should work in tandem with your offline program, otherwise, why are you doing it?
  • Most of the world’s problems can be solved with a hug (online and offline.)
  • If you want better political outcomes, build a better engaged and informed public.
  • People will do most anything for a person or group they know, like, and trust.
  • Maintaining an attitude of gratitude and being in service to otheers is my secret to happiness.
